The Next Big Thing

December 05, 2013

Established in Northampton, England in 1873, Church’s has over a century’s worth of experience crafting some of the finest luxury footwear for men and women. Although it’s carried at the most renowned department stores around the world, the brand is now – after 100 years with only a London and New York brick and mortar locale – building its global presence, with this year’s standalone openings including Shanghai, Amsterdam, and Stockholm, as well as a brand new Chicago flagship on the Gold Coast. A handsome 800 sq ft space awash in oak wood, with Saint Laurent marble flooring and tufted leather sofas, the spiffy Church’s Chicago stocks the full footwear collection plus a selection of thoroughly English accessories from bags to umbrellas.

Still heralding their age-old craft workshop approach, each shoe takes 8 weeks to hand-manufacture in Northampton using their specialty ‘welting’ technique, such that the sole can easily be detached from the bottom of the shoe and re-soled for a second life. Since these are shoes you can expect to wear forever, it makes sense all the styles are timeless: from the new collection the men’s Leyton is a classic derby style with small-grain hammered leather, while the women’s Indigo takes typical Oxford construction and adds an elegant perforated motif for a contemporary touch. Well shod!
