Spectacular Chicago Skyline

October 04, 2012
Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise

The birthplace of the skyscraper, the city of Chicago is home to a stunning and instantly recognisable skyline, with towering edifices stretching across the banks of Great Lake Michigan and spanning architectural styles from Neo Gothic to Beaux Arts to Art Deco and beyond.

For any architecture or design buff, the Windy City is the gleaming jackpot – but even if the names Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright don’t ring any bells, a quick tour of the city’s many sculptural wonders is a marvellous must-do for Chicagoans and visitors alike.

Enter the Chicago Architecture Foundation, a non-profit organisation that has made it impeccably easy to discover the city’s sights in style – namely, aboard a 1920s cruising vessel called ‘Chicago’s First Lady’, where docents give a brief city history and cover over 50 architectural landmarks, including Sears Tower, Wrigley Building and Navy Pier among many others – all in 90 minutes.

You can sit out on the open deck and enjoy a spectacular view of the skyline, but if you prefer a more active outing, CAF organises over 80 other tours, from walking to bus to L train, and even by Segway!

Check the website for tour schedules and tickets – boat tours stop for winter season after Nov 18 and reopen in April
