Southern Comfort Fare

The Hart & The Hunter

Some of history’s greatest duos would be nothing without the other. Would we all have a shiny iPhone in our pockets if it weren’t for the dynamic Jobs and Wozniak dyad? And if Lennon and McCartney had never met, would the world ever have warbled along to such anthemic tunes as Hey Jude? It doesn’t bear contemplating, and in much the same way, had the mythical pair of the hart and the hunter never met, or the rather more tangible twosome of Kris Tominaga and Brian Dunsmoor, Los Angeles would find itself lamentably without smash Southern comfort food desti, The Hart & The Hunter.

While Tominaga and Dunsmoor now focus on individual projects, their legacy as one of the city’s most celebrated chef collabs lives on. Tucked away off Melrose Avenue, H&H brings a certain farm-swank – if you will – to the urbane neighbourhood. Mismatching porcelain, warm wooden tables and blue-tiled walls welcome you in, but all the while maintain a distinctly modern Cali sensibility. Similarly, the menu combines hearty Southern classics with contemporary American and European influences that are playful yet elegant, comforting yet surprising. Highlights include the shrimp and grits, cast iron roasted chicken and the unbelievably buttery biscuits and condiments. What a pair!
