Please Do Not Enter
Uninviting though the moniker may be, by-appointment-only menswear store and art showcase Please Do Not Enter has rather unsuccessfully repelled customers, instead proving to be quite the popular addition to Downtown’s burgeoning boutique scene since opening earlier this year. Sitting pretty on the industrially-outfitted penthouse floor of a stately Beaux Arts building, the loft-like concept space – complete with reclaimed hospital beds and a knobbly hazelwood dining table by Valentin Loellmann – homes a covetable ensemble of European-made men’s attire, contemporary artwork and eccentric design objets.
Curated by French founders Nicolas Libert and Emmanuel Renoird, the manly melange of ready-to-wear includes graphic-adorned apparel by Walter van Beirendonck, Misericordia knits, lush leather sneakers from British label Cipher and Gertrud & George travel luggage, but madam will also find plenty to please with beady Belle & Toile jewellery and femme scents by French perfumer Maison Francis Kurkdjian, plus Arik Levy sculptures and Elise Gabriel furniture. Even junior isn’t forgotten with alpaca plush toys by Lucky Boy Sunday, though budding entomologists might be just as taken with the collection of Kobja toad taxidermy cuffs and purses. The eclectic offerings are added to regularly – recent arrivals include stylish Stelle audio speakers and Guillaume Bardet lighting – so ring ahead, ignore the sign and do come on in.
