New Best Friend

May 09, 2013

While foams, vapours and micro faff can be fabulous as an occasional extravagance, most would agree that everyday dining should lean much more toward the fresh, uncomplicated and pretension-free – and that’s exactly the theory new West Third Street all-day diner Goldie’s subscribes to.

But don’t mistake the simplicity of the Everleigh team’s latest offering for blandness. With wholesome, seasonal, produce-driven menus, and a fit-out that at once exudes rustic warmth and contemporary design-savvy, Goldie’s might just be the most interesting and easy new friend you make this year.

The restaurant packs a lot into the overhauled, former Chado Tea House space, with bench-seats, booths and bar perches, plus a sweet little garden patio in front. Lashings of raw wood evoke quaint country nostalgia, while Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired shelving adds a hint of retro architectural chic.

The mod-Californian plates are by and large produced via the kitchen’s dual wood and coal-fired grill, with flatbreads, seafood, vegetables and meats featuring on both the lunch and dinner menus, along with avocado with smoked chili on toast for breakfast, garden-fresh salads like confit chicken and kale during the day, and larger plates including crab tagliatelle and roast pork collar in the evening. And with craft cocktails blended using house-made liqueurs, cider, beer, wine and Handsome coffee, Goldie’s looks to have the Midas touch indeed.
