Dining for Lovers
LA’s restaurant scene has some top-notch date-night spots. From sultry supper parlours to lavish fine diners, here are our top picks of the city’s most romantic restaurants – footsie under the table optional.
Transport yourself to the heart of Northern Italy, with a coveted perch at Angelini Osteria. Attracting the city’s beau monde with its classic Italian fare, Angelini is an aesthetic affair, so be sure to take the right arm candy. If you’re in time for Valentine’s Day there’s a specially designed set menu, otherwise, nibble on staples likes whole Mediterranean branzino roasted in sea salt and herbs or fresh pumpkin tortellini with asparagus. Bellissimo!
The sceney in/out terrace and sultry atmosphere at Catch LA draws in a chic, well-heeled crowd; the contemporary surf n’ turf menu makes them stay. Stylish, distressed leather black booths and exposed brick walls contrast with lush potted plants, while the city lights twinkle effervescently below. The indoor-outdoor vibe lends itself to a sense of al fresco dining; don’t miss showstoppers like crispy whole snapper with chilli and garlic and Alaskan king crab with honey lime vinaigrette. Got a date with dietary requirements? There’s a dedicated vegan menu, too.
Elegant and timeless, with a twinkly Mediterranean-styled deck and wow Tinseltown vistas, Ivory on Sunset is the place to go for some serious armour. Set the mood by sharing oysters in a Champagne mignonette sauce to start, before moving on to one of the top-notch mains such as chicken with truffle butter gnocchi and jus. I do!
If you’re looking for a secluded spot to whisper sweet nothings, then hightail it to Cliff’s Edge. The main patio area is sheltered by a huge verdant tree, so you’ll feel like you’re tucked away in a secluded secret garden, while inviting low-rise sofas are perfect for two. Tipples include the Jack Rose, an expertly blended mix of applejack brandy, lemon and pomegranate molasses, and there’s a small but considered bar menu of cured meat platters and cheese plates.
Back at the Peninsula, The Belvedere offers options to cosy up inside, or dine under the stars on the terrace, where a roaring fire pit pretty much guarantees some snuggle time. Sample David Codney’s Med-meets-LA menu and enjoy a glass of vino from the extensive wine list. Who could resist?
