From Street to Tavern

January 09, 2014

Mud Hen Tavern

Long one of Hollywood’s beloved restaurants, global street food hotspot STREET’s autumn 2013 closure was much lamented by loyal locals. Chef Susan Feniger insists that STREET isn’t gone, however, instead promoting her just-opened Mud Hen Tavern as its natural evolution; a grown-up, gastropub iteration of her cuisine. So, just three months after STREET’s doors shuttered, MHT’s have swung wide to reveal a whole new look – gone are the graffiti-inspired blackboard scribbles, and in their place are new booths, communal polished wood tables, and an expanded bar.
The dressed-up menu maintains the same kind of feel-good food that Feniger loves, with honest-to-goodness gourmet pub dishes like maple whisky-glazed short ribs, farmhouse mac n’ cheese, and the ‘ultimate Italian deli panini’ alongside staple wood-fired pizzas and burgers, plus some global influences including Kaya toast and spinach potato pierogi. And with the new ‘pub’ aspect, it’s only fitting that arguably the most important addition to the space is the new bar, its beverage program run by Morgan Fox (Upstairs II, Poutal Wine Bar) and featuring a selection of local craft beer as well as specialty cocktails like the ‘Go Figure’ with fig-infused Maker’s Mark bourbon, Combier fruits rouge, five spice and lemon. From street to tavern – it’s evolution, baby!
