Wukesong Ice World

Bone-chiller Beijing has barely seen a flake of snow this winter, so imagine the excitement among locals when a frost-flourished scene of wintry wonders was unveiled at the Wukesong Ice World in December, just 30 minutes away from the city centre in Haidian. Covering a cool 15,000 square metres, the family fun fest is home to Asia’s largest ice-skating rink, a 10-metre high tube slide, cosy caff and, until the end of February, the Scandi-themed Snow World where nippers young and old can whizz down manmade sledding slopes and scamper about a castle playground.

Glide over to Hi-Park (on the southeast side of the MasterCard Center) then follow the signs to the entrance where you can get kitted up with orange skates and helmets, plus an oh-so stylish ‘bobby seal’ stabiliser – essential for beginners who don’t want to end up blade-over-behind on the main rink or interconnected ‘ice bumper car’ area. Once you’ve landed a few axels (or shuffled a few laps), de-boot and have a quick zip down the snow slide then heat up in the oversized igloo-esque cafeteria with coffee, hot chocolate and snacks. All of the main attractions are set to stay well into summer, but if you want to brave the shallow slopes of neighbouring Snow World you’ve only got until spring – so get your skates on!
