Real-deal Indian

March 14, 2014

Three Colours Lotus

Although much-loved the world over, Indian cuisine abroad is sadly and all too often subject to inauthentic iterations that have been ‘tailored’ to a local palate. It was no surprise then, that Beijing boasted few real-deal Indian establishments until the recent arrival of Three Colours Lotus, a North Indian restaurant helmed by a team of chefs (hailing from high-end hotel kitchens across India) who have rather delightfully made little allowance for local tastes. Better yet, they work with a traditional tandoor oven and in an open kitchen, so you can see how it’s really done!

Many of the dishes are instantly recognisable Indian stalwarts such as lamb rogan josh, shrimp masala, panak paneer, vegetable samosas, and of course onion bhaji fritters, but what makes them stand out from the takeaway melee is their uniquely unapologetic blend of spices that does not pander to the spice phobics nor curry favour with the chilli addicts, but delivers bang-on genuine flavours. Like any self-respecting Indian restaurant, the ice-cold Kingfisher flows on tap, while their fresh-blended mango lassi does well to lessen the heat. However, if the carved alcoves, bright blue, red and purple walls, and blaring Bollywood beats prove too much for your digestion to handle (although we rather liked it!), you can always order the food to be delivered to your home or hotel room...
