The Taco Bar 

Back in 2012, The Taco Bar was an under-the-radar, reservation-only hutong haunt prized by those in the know for its rolled tortilla delights and ever-flowing tequila pours, but sadly, just a year later the foodie favourite had up and disappeared from the local F&B landscape. Fast forward to the end of 2014 and once devastated Mexi-lovers have new reason to rejoice, with The Taco Bar making a glorious return in bright new Chaoyang digs. 

Naturally, the menu offering focuses on the namesake dish, but in order to hone his craft this time round, owner-chef Kin Hong spent time in Mexico, only returning once his careful study of seven specialty flavours was perfected. Headlining the group are the Hongos with grilled mushrooms, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream, and the Al Pastor stuffed with marinated pork belly, white onion and pineapple – but big appetites should be sure to start and finish with the chorizo-packed Rocky’s Queso Fundido cheese dip, and vanilla ice-cream-topped, sugar-dusted Canelitas funnel cake respectively. When it comes to accompaniment, it would be rude to forgo a requisite shot of tequila, especially with premium labels like Patron XO Café and Don Julio Blanco lining the shelves, but if you must, opt instead for a house cocktail like the gin, lime and cucumber Gato, or the Ghetto Michelada, a Pabst Blue Ribbon dusted with chili lime salt.
