Sm-Art Space

Meridian Space

Beijing’s 798 Art Zone – the revivified industrial area at the epicentre of China’s creative boom – is now positively bursting with much of the world’s best contemporary Asian art. But, with the nation’s artistic resurgence showing no signs of slowing, galleries are fast seeping out into surrounding Dongcheng, with new creative spaces sprouting eastwards like lovely little ink spots on a Hua Tunan canvas. The latest of these is Meridian Space, an old printing works newly converted into a multipurpose gallery-cum-coffeehouse.

Wrapped around a towering smokestack chimney – in which the owners plan to install a spiral staircase leading to a lofty gallery – Meridian Space sprawls across an enormous exposed brick warehouse and several open courtyards. The ground floor is home to a laidback café-bar, serving Italian coffee, cocktails and healthy Sino-Californian snacks, with sought-after deck chairs spilling out onto the adjoining patio during summer. A separate area serves as an exhibition, performance and lecture space, where the ongoing Green Box Project showcases a wall of graphic prints, handmade homewares and other works up for sale by local artists. Upstairs is given over to a workshop and smaller gallery of rotating art exhibitions, and up on the roof you’ll find a series of interconnected gable terraces that host the occasional communal BBQ, or can be hired out for private parties with food, music and ravishing skyline views provided. Sm-art.
