La Bonne Vie in Beijing

December 08, 2014
Un Livre

With a moniker translating to ‘the book’, it might seem obvious that newly opened CBD bolthole Un Livre would offer a tranquil space in which to retreat from bustling city life. But refreshingly, the bijou all-day diner goes one step further, nailing French café culture to the letter with its shaded street-front tables, pretty cut flowers, arty book-lined interior, bentwood chairs and a growing selection of simple Gallic staples like freshly baked almond croissants, charcuterie and tempting sweets.

Take a spot on the peaceful Parisian-esque patio – or if the weather doesn’t cooperate, make for the cosy mezzanine level – then pop your paperback aside for a moment to peruse a light-bites menu featuring savory pastries, simple but well-prepared pastas, and a perfectly plated salmon and fennel salad – a nod to the chef’s background cooking in the kitchens of international hotels. You can enjoy l'heure du thé anytime of day with the for-two high tea, featuring Chinese and imported blends, or ditch the petits fours for full-sized boulangerie classics including chocolate eclairs, macarons and decadently creamy cheesecake. And for those that would rather finish their meal in the true French fashion, there’s even a thigh-busting fromage platter with aged blue and brie cheeses plus homemade jams. Ah, la bonne vie!
