Anime Meets Edamame

January 09, 2014

In the age of Game of Thrones, CGI-laden Lord of the Rings movies, and comic book-inspired live action films, dare we say being a geek has never been so chic. And though the cult world of anime (Japanese animation) has been enthralling international audiences since its emergence around one hundred years ago – with books, comics, and latterly TV shows and movies having all been spawned of this niche genre – it wasn’t until last September that Beijing-based anime lovers could take their obsession to the delicious next level via new Sanlitun eatery Koyama.

Though the tagline ‘anime-themed’ conjures all manner of cheesy and childish imagery, Koyama is more cool gallery than kid’s bedroom in its design, with figurine-displaying glass cases and sketches lining the crisp white walls, and sunken pale wood tables with tatami-style seating playfully accented with colourful cushions and crockery. Kimono-clad staff are on hand to help you wade through the almost disconcerting volume of dishes on offer, spanning okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancake), teppanyaki, grilled yakitori skewers, ramen and udon noodles and soups, and enough traditional and fusion sushi varieties to sate even a Godzilla-sized hunger. The solidly-executed fare is best paired with an Asahi beer and, let’s face it, as good an excuse as any to dust off the old comic books. Manga-tastic!
