Savile Row Arrives in Beijing

March 23, 2015
Henry Poole & Co.

Sartorialists the world over should make the pilgrimage to London’s Savile Row at least once in a lifetime – for no wardrobe is complete without a timeless, impeccably cut made-to-measure suit by one of the street’s generations-old tailors. But if you’re in Beijing, you can forgo the long-haul flight and instead slip down to The Peninsula’s shopping arcade for a fitting at Savile export, Henry Poole & Co. Established in 1846, this classic costumier has been hand-stitching ensembles for the illustrious likes of Sir Winston Churchill, Charles Dickens, John Pierpont Morgan, and now you, too.

No appointment? Worry not, just saunter into the Mayfair-esque space of deep woods and leather chesterfields where one of the expert tailors will get you kitted out. Choose from a range of over 80 fabric swatches from French Dormeuil and English-sourced Holland & Sherry to fine Italian from Ermenegildo Zegna, and your signature silhouette will soon be in the works. Allow around 45 days from the initial measure up – which should be followed by a first and second fitting – then just wait for your very own dandy finery to be delivered to your door. And if you’re really lucky, you might chance upon the store when master cutter Alex Cooke is in town for one of his twice-yearly consultations. Suits you, sir!
