Festive Feasts

December 19, 2016
Seasonal Suppers
Greetings gourmets! There’s no shortage of festive feasts in Beijing for foodies who find themselves away-from home; simply ask the Peninsula’s trusted concierge to book you a table at one of these top dining spots.

For intimate low-key Italian, make for historic hutong laneway lovely Mercante, acclaimed for its authentic, home-style cooking. With just 10 tables and a terrace, this neighbourhood trattoria whips up fresh house-made pasta, paired with Italian cheeses, cured meats and delish desserts. Italian wines and craft beers ensure a merry night out, or gather a group for weekend brunch.

Swish sibling restaurant Fiume, (Emilia Romagna-raised Omar Maseroli is the chef and co-owner of both), is more contemporary, decorated with white tiles, stainless steel accents and aquatic art, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Liangma River. The seasonal menu still doffs its cap to tradition though, including delights such as potato gnocchi with ragu alla Bolognese, hand-made pasta and a grand line in grappas.

For a distinctly Asian-bent book a table at Max Levy’s intimate Okra 1949 to sample his boundary pushing, mod-fusion Japanese fare in sleek Sanlitun surrounds. You can expect sushi, sake and cocktails, but enjoy the surprise of more original palate-tingling dishes. Proof Christmas dining doesn’t have to be all about turkey, roast potatoes and kitsch crackers!
