Culture Calling… Bookworm Literary Festival

Calling all Beijing bibliophiles! The Chinese capital’s stalwart lending library The Bookworm will send lit-lovers into their annual frenzy with the 10th spectacular edition of its storied Bookworm Literary Festival – and it promises to be one heck of a page-turner...

For two weeks this month, the space will play host to the intellectual and creative dialogue generated by a lineup of more writers, thinkers, artists and performers from China and beyond than ever before. Among the respected roster of readers are revered Chinese author A Yi; pivotal figureheads of China’s avant-garde poetry movement Yang Li and Yi Sha; and bestselling American essayist and feminist crusader Roxane Gay, to name but a very few.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find time to see it all, but be sure to nab a ‘drinking ticket’ to Whisky and Writers, where you’ll observe a spirit-fuelled storytelling jam by five artists (read: five writers, five whiskies, five stories). Also, simply not-to-be-missed is China Future Perfect, a series of 13 tip-top panel discussions exploring contemporary Chinese society via its environment, art and religion.

What’s more, the festival isn’t limited to the ‘Jing – more than 300 events, ranging from children’s storytelling sessions and cartoon creation workshops, will take place in Chengdu, Suzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai and Beijing combined. Read on!
