Hong Kong’s Art Basel may have been hogging the headlines of late, with Hollywood A-Listers Leo DiCaprio and Adrien Brody dropping by Asia’s biggest art fair, but Beijing’s contemporary art scene is about to get its moment in the spotlight too. Returning to the city for its 10th edition, Art Beijing 2016 brings all the local Asia-focussed art to the yard, including Chinese, Korean and Japanese offerings, while keeping its finger on the global art pulse.
Collectors, critics and art-lovers convene at the Agricultural Exhibition Centre of China for this annual fair, Beijing’s answer to Basel and the place to admire world-class works from top Asian, European and American galleries. This year’s art smorgasbord boasts an expanded menu, with a contemporary pavilion, classic pavilion and a Design Beijing section, promoting Chinese talent and exploring future design-art trends. Former Art Fair Tokyo director Takahiro Kaneshima is the fair’s new Director of Art.
Look out for public art event Art Park, encouraging interaction with bold artworks in several shows and installations around town. The hub is in the main exhibition centre with offshoots at Chaoyang Joy City and Shun Yi. Apply for your VIP pass to attend the first evening on April 30 (6-10pm), an exclusive preview night, with opening hours for the next three days from noon until 9pm (till 6pm on May 3). It’s an art attack!
