Breaking the Mode

October 19, 2015
It was once a fool’s errand trying to track down anything more interesting than the ubiquitous luxey logos, splashed across bags and mags everywhere in Beijing. All too aware of this drought of lesser-known, design-led talent, voguish hero, Kit On, and his equally on-trend other half, Acean, started on a sartorial mission and Anchoret was born – a stylish bastion set on Sanlitun’s not-yet sceney backstreets.
Based around the concept of a gallery where the focus is placed on fostering an awareness of emerging and creative independent labels, the bijou boutique’s unique approach to dapper dressing soon amassed a cult following.
And to this day, fashionable hers and sirs alike still flock to get their mani’d mitts on the carefully curated cache of garms, accessories, footwear and objects. From meticulously crafted architectural outerwear by New York-based InAisce to effortlessly layerable apparel from Misnomber Nuan, via chunky jewellery handmade in England by Chin Teo, the wares on offer present something rather special.
Which brings us back to the store itself. Minimal to the end, it unites industri-cool elements (think polished concrete and distressed metal and wood) with site-specific fixtures imagined by the unstoppable Kits, plus found vintage items. Now how is that for breaking the mode?
