Suited & Booted

Allen Xie
Our story begins just five years ago in an unassuming Shanghai high-rise with a rather rakish young Allen Xie as its protagonist. A UK law graduate with a gimlet eye for detail, Xie had returned to his homeland – after rubbing shoulders with the Savile-tricked out Brit elite – only to realise that, despite owning upwards of 40 suits, his wardrobe was lacking in a style that matched his sartorial aspirations.

Being the enterprising fellow that he was, Xie sought a solution that would not only swaddle him in success (with ateliers launching in Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu), but also primp his peers in similarly spiffy garms. Thus, his eponymous modern menswear label was born.

But what sets Allen Xie apart from the reams of skillful tailors to be found across China? Well, this dapper designer has created an immediately identifiable, signature silhouette that complements the Chinese physique with square, substantial shoulders, wide lapels and a nipped waist – a vision that has won him patronage from some of the nation’s hippest and highest flyers.

Affluent dandies adorn themselves in everything from double-breasted and vested fine wool suits, tailed tuxedos and cashmere overcoats, to velvet-padded smoking jackets, on-trend cutaway collared linen or cotton shirts, and silk paisley pocket squares with matching bow-ties.

Add to this certain irreverent elements – in particular the ‘Eye of Allen’ buttonholes fashioned after the designer’s own peepers – and you have a top-notch tailor repping a new generation of sartorially savvy gents. Go on, suit yourself!
