Mod Art Must-See

February 22, 2016
Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center
So you’ve taken in the temples, shopped up a storm and eaten your body weight in mango and black sticky rice… But did you know Bangkok also offers contemporary art to impress curious travellers too? Culture vultures should flock to Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center, colloquially known as the RCAC, on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, to get a feel for what local talents are up to.

A striking polished concrete warehouse, with airy high-ceilinged, columned display areas set over four storeys, it showcases rotating exhibitions every three months starring Thailand's contemporary artists, as well as some international names. Expect paintings, drawings, sculptures, mixed-media and installations addressing everything from city life to spirituality, festivals to food, politics to the environment.

You may encounter figurative and abstract works, landscapes and light art, as well as social statements made using Thai masks, with both emerging and established names in the frame. A screening/lecture room, coffee bar, shop, library, workshop and reception/events zone are all part of the space, as well as the interactive ASEAN Cultural Centre on the third floor.

For atmospheric arrivals or departures, take a khlong boat along the canals to Phan Fa Lilat pier (sometimes called Panfa Leelard), a short walk from the venue. Ask for directions to the Khlong Saen Saep boat Golden Mount Line or commandeer a tuk-tuk.
