New Book Nooks

In a super-charged city, sometimes it’s good to just relax with a book. Bookworms are spoilt for choice in Bangkok, which is blessed with a clutch of cool new bookstores for stocking up on rollicking reads and coffee table eye candy.

The massive, architectural Think Space B2S at Central Festival EastVille is Bangkok’s biggest bookshop and the largest in Southeast Asia. Set over several floors, the light, plant-dotted space is lined with curvy shelves and chill-out spots for browsing. Its five zones include lifestyle, art/design, entertainment, play, and networking – a hub for brainstorming ideas.

Hybrid bookshop/bar Zombie Books occupies nightlife strip the RCA. Simple wooden shelves on the ground-floor stock mainly Thai language tomes and international translations, plus handpicked English-language reads. The second level hosts a co-working/gallery space, while the third-floor blue-hued 1970s Bar sports graphic art. Live bands perform Fridays and Saturdays.

Fans of design, art and fashion publications should beeline for Gaysorn Plaza to check out hip import Papersmith by Booksmith, independent Chiang Mai emporium The Booksmith’s first outpost in the capital. Tricky-to-find tomes on graphic design and architecture beg to be flicked, alongside style mags from Kinfolk to Monocle.

For books, prints and photos, head to savvy Editions, geared towards local art and culture. Set in riverside mall The Maharaj, this indie store includes two funky black-and-white wings, divided by a graphic map of Bangkok’s Old Town. You’ll find books on cycling and cafe culture, alongside bags, gifts and even Mövenpick ice-cream!
