Shop Up A Storm

April 18, 2016
It’s the ultimate travel dilemma: what to buy for the expectant fam back home? If you’re having souvenir stress in Bangkok, and don’t want to load up on the usual cliched trinkets and foodie treats (here’s looking at you, dried mango), then think big – or rather go BIG+BIH (aka the Bangkok International Gift and Houseware Fairs).

Every April, this epic, gloriously shoppable art and crafts fair takes over the BITEC convention centre in Bangna, with around 600 brands and 1,600 booths. Although it’s exclusively for trade visitors from 19-21 April, the public are welcome to join in the action for two days on Friday and Saturday 22-23 April.

Great for gifting, it’s a hive of decorative objects, handicrafts, green and eco prods, with toys, jewellery, stationery, textiles and tableware up for grabs. Pick up some sinuous ceramic bowls, kooky glass vessels topped with metal heads or mugs printed with graphic alphabet letters. You’ll find everything from pendant lights to artificial flowers, animal figurines to funky dog kennels.

Naturally, local products star here, but this crafts extravaganza isn’t only full of Thai treats. It also showcases inspiring Asian wares from India, Taiwan, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Japan, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia too, as well as more far-flung Ghana in Africa. Bring a generous tote bag and get ready to shell out for extra luggage on the flight home.
