Fern-filled Dining Alcove

October 13, 2014
Humming Birds Kitchen & Garden
From the laidback grassy plot surrounding boutique brew spot Mikkeller to the sprawling formal lawns of The Gardens of Dinsor Palace, it’s easy to see why the garden setting is a growing trend for restaurants and bars in this hot, non-stop, bustling city. And adding yet another cool and leafy enclave to the Bangkok scene is Humming Birds Kitchen & Garden, a newly opened, casual bistro serving up Thai and French fare amid a wonderfully lush fernery setting.
The glass-encased restaurant, adorned with bare bulbs, mismatched designer chairs, worn wooden tables and neatly florid bouquets, has already become a firm favourite with families and lunching ladies seeking respite from the sultry capital for its mod-rustic aesthetic. Fresh Thai offerings like crispy fried rice noodles and green chicken curry come topped with herb goodies grown just outside and are flavoured with housemade pastes; while, the French end of the spectrum includes garlic-butter clams, and duck with Cognac and caper sauce – just be sure to leave room for the signature ice-creams and sorbets made with locally-sourced fruit like lychee, mango and custard apple. Wining and dining done, slip into one of the leafy little nooks dotted around the grounds for a postprandial Umeshu honey-lime soda. Chin chin!
