Top Tips for Spring in New York

Get Out n' About

Spring has sprung, so skip outside and hit up our fave green spaces in NYC…

Central Park. New York would be inconceivable without this 843-acre expanse of green delight. Pack a picnic and head to Sheep Meadow, a lovely eye candy-dotted lawn. You can’t beat the retro spectacle of the roller disco ‘funk circle’ (at 72nd St on weekends). Hire a rowboat on the lake and grab a cocktail after at the Boathouse; or simply circle the reservoir for magnificent Midtown views. Central P-aahhhh-k.

High Line. This elevated rail line-turned-park paradise offers panoramic city and Hudson vistas stretching out from the Meatpacking District. Weekends are rammed; head north of 15th for a quiet, oh-so lovely stroll as sun sets. Enjoy season launch day Culture Shock (1pm-6pm 22 Apr), or join regular nature, art, design or adventure tours. Fill a picnic basket first at Chelsea Market below, a factory transformed into a fab food hall.

The Met Cloisters. Hush-hush, spesh branch of The Met in northernmost Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, dedicated to medieval European art and architecture. The gorgeous gardens, galleries and chapel make an atmossy getaway, and if the tapestries and stained-glass windows aren't captivating enough, there are also Hudson views.

Governors Island. This former Coast Guard base has been rejuvenated as an 172-acre family-friendly culture park with waterfront promenade, green space, picnic spots, art, cycle trails and music festivals, all just a fast, free ferry ride from lower Manhattan (open from 1 May).

Brooklyn Botanic Garden. A peaceful alternative to Central Park, Brooklyn’s BG covers 52 acres of woodland; tropical, temperate, and desert enclosure habitats; and Japanese gardens replete with adorable bridges and koi- and turtle-filled ponds. Inhale the scent of cherry blossom as you walk, then tuck into a reward at nearby institution Peter Luger Steakhouse.
