Beverly Hills, California
In 1906, Burton E. Green and other investors purchased the area that is now downtown Beverly Hills. They named their company the Rodeo Land and Water Company and the development’s main street Rodeo Drive. In 1921, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford built “Pickfair,” a mansion in the hills north of what is now Sunset Boulevard. The glamour associated with Fairbanks and Pickford as well as other movie stars who built mansions in the city contributed to Beverly Hills’ growing appeal. Today around 35,000 people live in the city, mostly in what is called the “flats,” though the largest estates tend to be in the hills not far from Pickfair. Visitors from all over the world come to Beverly Hills to see the beautiful homes of the stars, past and present.
Paramount Studios, Hollywood
Opened in 1912, Paramount Studios is the longest operating and only major studio remaining in Hollywood. Paramount has been on the ground floor of every major development in film, from the advent of motion pictures to the emergence of television and onward through the digital revolution. The legendary stars that have worked on the Paramount lot range from Rudolf Valentino, the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, Elvis Presley, and Audrey Hepburn, to Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie.
Malibu Pier
Built in 1905, the Malibu Pier has been seen in movies and TV shows from “Gidget” and “Beach Blanket Bingo” to “The Rockford Files.” The Malibu Pier has been badly damaged by storms and earthquakes over the years. In 2009, California State Parks won the Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award for its restoration of the pier. Surfers from around the world come to Surfrider Beach adjacent to Malibu Pier, known for its three-point break that offers rides of 300 yards or more.
Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills
Since the 1970s, Rodeo Drive has become the ultimate homage to fashion, jewels and art, with boutiques from the world’s most famous brands such as Prada, Gucci, Valentino, Armani, Versace, Dior, YSL, Tom Ford, Cartier and Harry Winston. The three long palm tree- and boutique-lined blocks of Rodeo Drive are a great place to see an endless parade of fascinating, beautiful people from around the world.
