Alexander McQueen

When the 40-year old fashion genius Alexander McQueen tragically and unexpectedly died in 2010, there was uncertainty among the fashion fraternity that the eponymous couture house could ever continue without the enigmatic and maverick McQueen at the helm. But with the naming of Sarah Burton as Creative Director (formerly McQueen’s personal assistant and since 2000 head of womenswear) the brand has gone from strength to strength, culminating most famously in 2011 with the celebrated design of the Duchess of Cambridge’s dress for her marriage to Prince William. In keeping with its ever exacting and perfectionist credentials, September saw the closing of the brand’s Meatpacking District store and its move to a stunning new flagship space on Madison.

The breathtaking 3,500 sq ft space is the result of a collaboration between Burton and David Collins Studio, featuring the opulence of polished, geometric black marble floors, gilded glass display cases and heavily embellished plaster frieze work, incorporating a cornucopia of shells, leaves, feathers, sea-horses and the now notorious signature ‘Armadillo’ shoes so favoured by fashion mavens Daphne Guinness and Lady Gaga. Housing the full complement of McQueen lines from runway to RTW mens and womenswear, shoes to accessories, and jewellery to handbags, it’s a one-shop ultra fashion stop. Go, Madison!
