Having seen huge success in both Hong Kong and Shanghai, the Gaia Group’s esteemed Italian eatery Isola has naturally turned its pasta-pulling hands to complete the Chinese trifecta – with a recently-opened outpost in Beijing, of course. Sitting pretty in Sanlitun’s Taikoo Li, Isola BJ boasts the trademark aesthetic mirrored in its sister cities, with an understated ‘white on white’ theme featuring blonde woods and crisp linens, and a refined menu of pared back classics to match.
While the original Isola in Hong Kong boasts a charming alfresco patio with harbourside views, and the Shanghai shop offers prime front row vistas of the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower, the Beijing branch has a calling of its own, with a spacious outdoor terrace and an intimate indoor ‘verandah’. Take a perch here or in the elegant main dining room to enjoy the signature pastas and stone-baked pizzas, with favourites like homemade tagliolini with beef ragout and thyme-roasted mushrooms, saffron risotto with ossobuco, and crispy pies alla fiorentina (with spinach, ricotta and egg) and trifola (with black truffle, mozzarella and mache leaves). Add a host of expertly grilled secondi (we’re partial to the monk fish medallions and Tuscan style T-bone steak), plus an extensive list of Italian wines, and it seems Isola is well on the way to scoring their third win.
