What Defines The Peninsula Experience?

The Peninsula name is synonymous with romance, glamour and style – hotels in some of the world’s most exciting cities, stunning facilities, world-class service and a unique combination of tradition, heritage, innovation and glamour offer guests a hotel stay unlike any other, whether on business or leisure.

As the world’s leading small luxury hotel group, The Peninsula Hotels has a proud heritage as Asia’s oldest hotel company, which first started in Hong Kong in 1866.

  • The Story OfHow It All Began

Parent company of The Peninsula Hotels, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels' long history stretches back almost as far as Hong Kong itself.

In 1880, two brothers from Baghdad, Ellis and Elly Kadoorie, arrived in Shanghai, marking the beginning of a remarkable family business. They bought their first shares in the company in 1890, and The Kadoories are still at the helm today as majority shareholders of one of the world’s finest small luxury hotel groups and China’s first luxury hospitality brand, with an unmatched heritage stretching back to 1866.

  • Once upon a time in China...

The HSH story began in 1890 when Sir Elly Kadoorie purchased 25 shares in the The Hongkong Hotel Company Limited, which was founded and registered on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1866.

  • In Shanghai, The Shanghai Hotel Company (founded in 1896 as  Central Stores Limited, and renamed in 1917) had purchased the Central Hotel (built in 1875), aiming to make it the largest and most modern hotel in China. It re-opened in 1909 as The Palace Hotel, followed by The Astor House Hotel (1911), the Kalee Hotel (1920) and the Majestic Hotel (1924).

Steeped in glamour, sophistication and intrigue, Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s was one of the world’s great international cities, with a modern skyline and manners to match.

The four HSH properties quickly became some of the most celebrated and profitable hotels in the world, introducing into China such innovations as tea and dinner dances and European-style grill rooms, and hosting film stars, politicians, the rich and the famous.

  • In May 1922, The Shanghai Hotel Company purchased 60% of Beijing’s finest hotel, The Grand Hotel des Wagons-Lits, in the heart of the Legation Quarter at the terminus of the Trans-Siberian railway route from Europe to China.

  • The Hong Kong Story

The Hongkong Hotel Company planned to become the major player in the Far Eastern hotel business, and thus over the first three decades of the 20th century the Kadoorie brothers founded a collection of the colony’s most iconic hotels.
  • With some of the world’s most prominent hotels in its portfolio, The Hongkong Hotel Company, under the stewardship of Sir Elly and Sir Ellis Kadoorie, acquired an 85% controlling interest in The Shanghai Hotel Company in May 1922. The two companies merged in October 1923, forming The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (HSH), parent company of The Peninsula Hotels.

The Hongkong Hotel Company had opened the Hongkong Hotel on Hong Kong island in 1868,which was dubbed by the media the "greatest enterprise of the kind in China and Japan"

  • The Repulse Bay Hotel (opened in 1920) and the Peak Hotel (opened in 1889, purchased in 1922) were followed by other new developments including the creation of one of the world’s most legendary hotels - The Peninsula Hong Kong, in 1928.

  • The Peninsula Hong KongThe Grand Dame Revealed

Every great lady has a history, and The Peninsula Hong Kong is no exception.

Hers is a remarkable story of vision and evolution.

  • The Peninsula Hong Hong exterior in 1928

The architects who in the early 1920s drew up plans for “the finest hotel east of Suez” did so at the behest of men whose foresight and confidence in Hong Kong set them on what was considered an audacious path. But from the moment The Peninsula opened on 11 December, 1928, it was evident that the seeds of progress sown by the directors of HSH had indeed found fertile ground.

    The Original Page Staff
  • Over the years, The Peninsula has been witness to and participant in the history of Hong Kong, celebrating its dramatic progress, weathering the turbulence of war and military occupation and meeting the challenges posed by the changing needs of the international traveller.

  • Welcoming the World

She has endured – and beautifully so – in a city which possess precious few remnants of a rich and colourful past. Through her “wonderfully pukka sahib” Lobby have strolled myriad stars of the stage and screen, renowned authors, musicians and political figures. Hong Kong dubbed her “The Pen”, and she is referred to thus around the world.

  • The Peninsula’s iconic pageboys (1954)

Through the years The Peninsula Hong Kong has introduced a myriad of innovations to Hong Kong and to Asia, including the now-iconic Peninsula pageboy, afternoon tea and tea dances, Hong Kong’s first buffet and discotheque, many top international luxury brands in the Peninsula Arcade and the world’s consecutive largest single orders of Rolls-Royce motor cars.

  • The Peninsula Hotels and Rolls-Royce have been associated in excellence for almost 45 years, in a record-breaking partnership that began with The Peninsula Hong Kong’s first order for seven Silver Shadows in 1970.

  • The Peninsula Tower was unveiled in 1994, rising 29 floors from the original six-storey building and adding more rooms and suites with spectacular views, a pool and spa, a helipad and a rooftop restaurant designed by Philippe Starck.

  • An Era OfExpansion

The final three decades of the 20th century saw a new era of growth and expansion across Asia and the United States by The Peninsula Hotels, cementing The Peninsula Hotels' position as the most iconic address in each global gateway city and continuing the company’s long tradition of combining the heart of each destination with glamour, innovation and a true “sense of place” with each hotel.

The company philosophy is to invest in each property rather than just manage them, thus giving a much longer-term outlook and a very particular, very focused growth pattern.

  • The Peninsula Manila

Built in 1976 to coincide with the International Monetary Fund conference in Manila, The Peninsula Manila holds a special place in the development of The Peninsula Hotels, being the first hotel outside of the Hong Kong flagship to be opened under The Peninsula brand name. Opening as the first computerised hotel in the Philippines and in the process, revolutionising the local hotel industry, this hotel has been a witness and participant in the history of the capital, weathering turbulent political climes and celebrating the transformation of the Makati Central Business District into the centrepiece of a nation’s vision and evolution.

  • The Peninsula New York

HSH entered the North American market in December 1988 with the acquisition of a landmark Beaux-Arts building in New York, which began life as the Gotham Hotel. The building, completed in 1905, is situated at the junction of 55th Street and Fifth Avenue, in the heart of Manhattan. It still stands proudly as The Peninsula's first venture into North America.

The Palace Arcade (today’s Peninsula Arcade) opened in 1991, introducing the world of luxury goods to the Chinese capital.

    The Peninsula Beverly Hills

  • The Peninsula Bangkok

With the number nine being a lucky number for the Thai people, the date and timing of The Peninsula Bangkok’s opening on 19 November, 1998 at 9:09am was auspiciously planned with celebrations featuring a traditional Chinese lion dance and a blessing at the front entrance. Whether looking out over the Chao Phraya River, of which all guestrooms have a view, or strolling within the public areas bedecked with wonderful pieces of art, the hotel presents a picture of elegance and distinction, Thai-style.
