Iconic Cupcakes Land in Tokyo

August 25, 2014
Magnolia Bakery
Any self-respecting dessert lover worth their weight in clotted cream should be more than familiar with the name Magnolia Bakery. The iconic NYC sweet stop has been keeping Goham dentists in business since the mid-90s, while simultaneously plotting its world domination, it seems. The latest international city to fall under the bakery’s spell? Tokyo, with the bustling Omotesando shopping district chosen as ground zero. On opening day, clamouring fans waited for up to six hours for their first taste, hardly surprising given MB is often cited as the originator of the global cupcake craze, steadily stretching to all corners of the Earth for a good five years now.

Once you gain access, expect to find a hexagonally-tiled, eggshell blue interior accented with more than 40 varieties of pastel-frosted goodies, winking seductively from glass cabinets and cake stands. Choose from buttercream-iced miniature cake confections, with flavours like caramel, red velvet and peanut butter & jelly, or select from the dizzying array of pastries spanning meringue-slathered White-Out chocolate sponges, delectable Whoopie Cookies (two brown sugar cookies sandwiching a maple cream cheese filling), and banana pudding layered with vanilla wafers. Pair your treat with a blissfully tart fresh lemonade, and remember: whatever you do, leave the calorie counter at home!
