Evolving Attire

October 05, 2015
Maison Margiela at Isetan Shinjuku
The grand dame of Tokyo’s department stores, Isetan Shinjuku is always worth a visit – be it for her endless floors of lush international and local labels, exclusive homewares, fantastical food hall or just an ogle at those artist-created window displays.

But right now, the centenarian retail romp has rendered herself even more appealing – particularly for fans of edgy French fashion – with the arrival of a dazzling new concept boutique from avant-garde apparel house Maison Margiela.

Entitled ‘Martin Margiela – a chronology’, the pop-up space will stand for seven months but, as its name suggests, will undergo a number of thematic evolutions during that time, showcasing several different debut collections of men and womenswear, as well as limited edition shoes and accessories.

When it first opened, the third-floor, metallic stalactite-topped enclave was exhibiting Intersection, an assembly of items inspired by the brand’s love of fusing contradictory elements. However, this has now made way for New Era, the much anticipated debut ready-to-wear collection by Margiela’s newly instated creative director John Galliano.

Expect high-waist flared skirts, full-length jackets, sinfully slit tops and a few natty knickerbockers. But get in quick, it won’t be long before the scene shifts again with three more outfit changes set to take place before the pop-up comes to a close at the end of February.
