David Bowie

January 16, 2017
David Bowie Is… Coming to Tokyo

Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke… David Bowie was the ultimate chameleon, changing stage personas, looks, hair colours and musical styles over his hugely influential career, but his charisma always endured. Fans of the late stage giant were bereft at his unexpected death in 2016, but Tokyo is lucky enough to host the perfect homage to the wild-eyed legend.

The rave-success, world-touring interdisciplinary retrospective of the British singer and his musical process arrives in Tokyo, as “David Bowie is” hits Warehouse Terrada, its only Asian venue, until early April. Originally curated by the V&A’s Victoria Broackes, the show has wowed 1.5 million people from London to Chicago, Melbourne, Paris and Sao Paolo. A journey through Bowie’s life, it features photography, costumes, fashion, album artwork, stage-set designs and handwritten lyrics, accompanied by interviews, video and a soundscape of tracks tying in with each creative period.

From mirror-effect installations, gig footage and clips of his striking film output (including WW2 prisoner of war drama Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, co-starring Takeshi Kitano and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto), the exhibition is a tour de force, with an exclusive, extra section on Bowie’s relationship with Japan. Devotees will learn more about their hero; newcomers will get a powerful taste of the man. Don’t miss the black-and-white photos of Bowie and Iggy Pop in the Berlin years, when seminal albums Low and Heroes were born. Genius.
