LUXE Roundup: Contemporary Cookbooks
As much as we adore eating out – whether it be white linened fine dining or down-home local eats – sometimes a home-cooked meal is the best remedy to a long day at work or weary traveller’s jetlag. With this in mind, we tracked down some of the best contemporary cookbooks of 2014 to add to our wishlist and recipe box – plus, now that spring has well and truly rolled around, there’s both fresh seasonal produce to play with, and the promise of many balmy evenings ahead. Dubbed the ‘Picasso of culinary arts’, Ferran Adrià will forever be remembered as the brains behind Spanish gastro temple elBulli, which was long considered the best restaurant in the world and the pinnacle of modernist cooking. Though Adrià served the restaurant’s last dish in 2011 and is now converting the space into a molecular ‘cooking laboratory’, elBulli lives on not only in memory but also in Phaidon’s just-released, seven-volume tome. Co-written by the brothers Adrià and Juli Soler, it features 700 recipes and 1,400 photographs, and is the guaranteed coffee table collectible for any devoted foodie.

Olives, Lemons & Za’atar by Rawia Bishara (Kyle Books)
East over the Mediterranean lies Nazareth, where chef Rawia Bishara was born and raised before she opened her restaurant Tanoreen stateside, years later. Now with the release of her cookbook ‘Olives, Lemons & Za’atar: The Best Middle Eastern Home Cooking’, she pays homage to the familiar flavours of Israel, with 135 comfort recipes that include dishes like spice rubbed braised lamb shank (marinated in ginger and rose buds), and eggplant napoleon (baba ghanouj layered between crisp eggplant and topped with basil and tomatoes). One of our Los Angeles dining stalwarts is American wine bar A.O.C., with its wood-burning oven and lip-smacking small plates paired expertly with wines… and now following her James Beard award-winning debut ‘Sunday Suppers at Lucques’, chef Suzanne Goin has released her sophomore cookbook neatly collecting A.O.C.’s addictive favourites to recreate at home. Think bacon-wrapped dates with parmesan, and duck sausage with candied kumquats, with each dish including bonus ‘pairing notes’ from wine director Caroline Styne. More like A.C.E!

First Prize Pies by Allison Kave (Abrams Books)
Sunny springtime means it’s the start of pie season, and rather than pulling out the old recipe box this year, we’re flipping through the colourful volume ‘First Prize Pies’ by Allison Kave, founder of the NYC namesake bakery, and maker of the perfect chewy-flakey pie crust. Famed for her inventive offerings like Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel Pie, Root Beer Float Pie, and the signature Candy Apple Pie, Kave organises all of her pie recipes into seasonal collections (one for every week of the year!) and even reveals the secret to a foolproof crust.
