Perhaps the trend started with Paris concept store Colette’s iconic basement restaurant Le Water Bar, serving upscale salads and designer water, but we can’t get enough of shopping for fab fashion, then supping on styley bites.
An urbane shop n' snack concept from Mr. Gentleman designer Yuichi Yoshii and fashion retailer Baycrews, Cityshop caters to “everyday life” in buzzy Tokyo. From clothing and food to culture and lifestyle, this two-storey, contemporary Minami Aoyama boutique has you covered, with smartly curated, creative collections, followed by easy eats.
Head upstairs to seek out fashion-forward yet casual his/hers apparel by homegrown kool kids such as Taro Horiuchi and UNUSED, plus tempting accessories, jewellery, homewares, Grown Alchemist grooming kit, music and books. Caps, candles and boys’ toys make great portable gifts.
Downstairs, pick up deli fare, including gourmet salads (from Classic Caesar to Mexican Cobb) and seasonal veg, meat, fish, grains, spices and superfoods. Produced by Yuichi’s café/deli Pariya, it includes goods to take out and dishes to eat in (lunch 11.30am-5pm). Fruit-and-mint granola and spelt-and-mushroom risotto are favourites. Veggie/celiac options will please all persuasions.
Sip on a hip drinks list spanning Cityshop blend coffee, herbal tea, ginger ale, kombucha and chai, or order a Brooklyn Lager, cocktail or bio wine.
Tokyo’s Jamo Associates is behind the simple, polished look, with stone tabletops, communal tables, canteen chairs and tiled walls. What no water bar?
