But luckily for Tokyo-based sweet tooths, there is a better, healthier alternative that doesn’t ditch on taste, and it goes by the name of ChocoReko, an artisanal label based in Saitama. To hand-make their delicious, low-GI chocolate, ChocoReko sources the highest-grade organic Ecuadorian cacao beans, raw-roasts them at a gentle 45 degrees (allowing them to retain all of their antioxidants), before adding a slight sweetness by way of raw palm sugar. What doesn’t go in? Preservatives, artificial colours, emulsifiers, and even dairy – in other words, everything is both heart-healthy and vegan-friendly.
This means guilt-free gluttony on their selection of goodies from hand-dipped mini bonbons to bitter raspberry bars, with other flavour combinations ranging from classic caramel to more exotic offerings like bitter basil and spiced apple pie.
