Art Fair Tokyo
If you want to get intimate with contempo Asian art, then beeline for the ever-expanding Art Fair Tokyo, which this year sports the theme Art is Alive: Getting Closer to Art, Art Getting Closer. It’s a canny reflection of our social media-fuelled times, with a recent revolution in the way we share images of art.
Culture vultures will delight in the 150 local and international galleries on display at the Tokyo International Forum. The Lobby Gallery free entrance zone explores the annual theme, visualising the idea of art as an extension of today’s lifestyle. Next up, the Access Area features stands from art media and museums, plus a lounge. Finally, the main Gallery Area is divided into a North Wing (antiques, modern art, crafts) and South Wing (contemporary art). 2017’s edit includes more galleries than ever before, as well as some impressive large-scale stands.
Japanese and Asian galleries lead the charge – from Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, South Korea and the Philippines – but you’ll also find Euro galleries hailing from Italy, Switzerland, France and beyond, with 21 first-timers. The Projects section offers solo shows from 12 galleries’ emerging artists, spanning painting, sculpture and installations, with regular guided tours.
AFT 2017 opens to the public from the afternoon of Friday 17 to Sunday 19 March, with a private preview and vernissage for special guests on Thursday 16 and VIP advance admission on the Friday morning. Score an invite!
