Cute Cafe-Conservatory

January 12, 2015
And People
The Japanese certainly know and appreciate their trees, with both the spring-time sakura and the autumnal turn of the maple celebrated as national events, but during the chillier months, the capital is hardly forthcoming with scenes of verdure. Fortunately for foliage-lovers, there’s a certain secret all-day cafe in Shibuya that is lush and leafy the year round. Hidden just a skip from Tokyu Hands, whimsical And People is a world away from the winter outside with its tangle of creeping vines, plants potted in old tomato tins and quaint chandeliers, plus fuss-free pickings and a cockle-warming selection of hot toddies.

Take a moment to meander through the entire two-storey space, which looks not unlike an enchanted wood packed into a New York loft with its white canopied terrace, bare bulbs, shab-chic furnishings and a cute rouge recess festooned with fairy lights and stained-glass windows. Having picked your prefered nook, peruse the menu of light mod-Med nibbles like scallop risotto, wine-steamed clams, crunchy Caesar salad and trad sweets such as tarte tatin. If it’s tea time, choose from more than twelve cha infusions including a surprising sweet potato blend. In need of something stiffer? Plump for warming seasonal sips such as the cinnamon mulled wine and a cream-topped Baileys hot choc. Lean, green and on the scene!
