New Bar: Wonderland
Some nights you just want to disappear down a rabbit-hole, take a trip through the looking glass or party with Mad Hatters. For an escapist Alice in Wonderland-esque evening, Shanghai has got the just bar for you…
Creative cocktails headline at nightlife veteran Johan Holmberg’s living room-style lounge Wonderland in Jingan, but the whimsical fairytale fit-out is nothing to be sniffed at either. Think top-hat and bird-cage light fixtures, chintzy tea party crockery, and neon-pink plastic flamingos and exposed ceiling pipes.
The zany, high-vis colour palette is picked up in bright green, cobalt and red armchairs, plush blue sofas, a faux-fur bar, and goldfish-patterned carpet, but it’s the psychedelic mural riffing on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland movie that steals the show. There’s even fake foliage and a sandy beach terrace that spills onto Xinzha Lu, meaning this venue rocks a great summer vibe.
Although there’s a clawfoot bath full of beer, kooky, affordable cocktails are the stars here. Wrap your lips around a Wonderland Rules, a gin, rose and cucumber number served in a delicate china cup that channels classic English tea parties. The Strawberry Sour is a blissful berry affair, while the Mushroom Garden is a fresh, sugary marriage of mint and gin. Team them with colourful bar snacks, from purple sweet potatoes to beetroot-topped garlic mushrooms. Crazy dreams are pretty much guaranteed…
