VaVa-Vintage Shopping in Shang
Top Picks… Vintage Stores
Shanghai has always had a love affair with the past, and while there are numerous vintage and retro stores around town these days, these are our absolute favourites. Swing by to source that dazzling one-off piece that no one else will be wearing…
Marvellously monikered Madame Mao’s Dowry curates early modern Chinese design, including utilitarian Mao-era clothing, backdropped by authentic Cultural Revolution propaganda posters, original 1950s to 70s photos, provincial furniture, contempo Sino art and antiques. Alongside hand-picked local craft and fashion designs – such as Shang-based Ekokami’s recycled cork, paper and printed cotton totes – own-label creations include enamelware with revolutionary slogans and glass cityscape baubles. A Mao figurine or woodblock print makes a memorable souvenir.
Lolo Love Vintage and we love stylist Lolo Luo! Shanghai’s vintage queen has filled her third sprawling space with nostalgic looks and kitsch ephemera, offering retro typewriters, kooky dolls and old-fashioned armoires. Alongside local finds, there’s internationally sourced style, including 1920s to 40s pieces from LA. It’s mostly womenswear and accessories, with some dandy kit for dudes. Vintage va-va-voom!
For imported 1940s to 80s fashion and accessories, head to Annata Vintage, packed with pieces owners Julia and Ting pick up on their travels. While the simple blue-walled, wood-floored store is very 30s Shanghai, the booty is globally sourced, including treasures from Italy, France, the UK and Japan. Flick the racks of tea dresses, jackets and tops, then unearth shoes, bags, belts, costume jewellery, cats’-eye sunglasses and homewares in this intriguing trove. Get rummaging!
