Urban Aphrodite

Shanghai is undoubtedly one of Asia’s most exciting and cosmopolitan cities – just look at the iconic architecture, top dining, and burgeoning visual art scenes – but it is decidedly lacking in the performing arts department, where it places squarely behind sister cities Beijing and Hong Kong. However with the launch of local theatre company Urban Aphrodite, Shanghai’s theatre-goers have gained a great English language option – and from its sold-out 2012 debut featuring David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries, to last season’s acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, to this season’s varied line-up, UA is proving to be a stalwart for the developing theatre scene.

Following this season’s shows like The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), a comedy in which three actors cover 37 Shakespeare plays in under two hours, and a return of the hit Santaland featuring the finalists of the “Glee Shanghai” school competition held by UA, founder and director Ann James turns now to the rather more serious Doubt: A Parable. Written by John Patrick Shanley, the show follows the ethical and spiritual dilemmas of a priest in 60s America, and debuted off-Broadway in 2004 to not only win both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, but also become an Oscar-nominated film starring Meryl Streep. Hardly a shabby testament to the quality of the piece – Doubt closes this weekend so don’t miss your last chance to catch it!
