Shanghai Stylista

February 28, 2014
Uma Wang

Long regarded as China’s fashion capital, Shanghai today still reigns supreme as the nation’s hub for exciting new designers, with even foreign talent like Celia Bernardo and Pernille Leschly Halle choosing to make the progressive city their mainland home. Though new faces have come and old gone, some, like Uma Wang, have remained a fixture, the seasoned fashion star having worked across the industry with myriad local labels for over 10 years before launching her own eponymous brand in 2005. China Vogue in particular has championed her use of a chiaroscuro palette, special knitting techniques (which she developed herself), and unusual materials (like a fabric made from paper that’s both strong and washable, but still soft and light).

Her uber-minimalist, industrial-tinged flagship in the affluent Xintiandi shopping district features rugged ash and sand-coloured walls, and sleek black racks that descend from the ceiling as a backdrop to Wang’s signature fusion of military and bohemian-inspired pieces. Among them are her sheer silhouette dresses, flowing hand-knit sweaters and perfectly drapey asymmetrical tunics for women, and onyx trenchcoats with gold button accents, tweed suit jackets and loose parachute pants for men. And as her designs reflect her career in the fashion, shoppers can be assured – a little Wang sure goes a long way!
