The Hub

Looking for a cool-credentialled hang in Shanghai? Then hightail it to The Hub, a cavernous mixed-use complex in the emerging Hongqiao business district.

The Hub houses the state-of-the-art Performance and Exhibition Centre, a new landmark for western Shanghai featuring an exhibition hall, 750-seat theatre, various bars, a cigar room, café, VIP lounges and golden toilet cubicles. A cultural hot spot, its nature-inspired interiors were designed by local starchitects Neri&Hu, with a three-storey atrium teaming grey sandstone with a canopy of sticks mimicking rocks and a forest of trees – think soothing urban oasis. Spanning the upper levels, the Treasure Box performance hall is fringed by floating screens, while VIP rooms feature handpainted blue-and-white tiles depicting the neighbourhood’s past. The undulating exterior is by Ben Wood of Studio Shanghai.

The Hub Mall is China’s first modern shopping mall directly connected to a transport hub, handy for Hongqiao links. International brands on board include Edwin for Japanese jeans, Clarks for Brit desert boots, Gap, H&M, Uniqlo, Adidas, and New Balance, as well as luxe Sino fashion label Shanghai Tang.

Catch an iMax movie, then graze the dining zone, including Hong Kong tastes, Yunnan cuisine, Thai bites and Korean desserts. Vegetarians can chow down on Northern Chinese-inspired tofu at Soya Soya, or sample Italian at Green Passionate. Naturally, fro yo, coffee and pastries are every which way. To echo The Hub’s slogan, “Go West!”
