The Attic

It’s not always easy for up-and-coming artists to find a creative outlet in a city as fast-moving as Shanghai, but thanks to passionate patrons Zack Agha and Toru Harada, arty neighbourhood Xuhui now offers one small all-purpose space packed to the hilt with creative projects – The Attic. Located on the 6th floor above popular bar-club Lune, The Attic is a shab-fab Parisian-style loft, complete with a colonnaded roof terrace and unhindered 360º views, that is quickly emerging as a bastion for talented graphic and clothing designers, photographers, film-makers and painters.

The mini artisan café, tucked under one of the white-washed eaves, brews up a mean pot of Cup of Excellence joe, to be quaffed either while admiring the art display (think collages by Yuantiantou, and Japanese Tenugui layered fabric prints) or lounging on their low-slung cushioned benches both indoors and out. On the other side of the space runs a rail of indie-label menswear featuring the likes of Twin Horizon’s screen-printed T-shirts, chambray shirts and backpacks from Tokyo label INST Design Work, whimsical trinkets and soft cotton beanies by Harada’s Nothing To Sell, and a display of transparent plexiglass skateboards. But what really pulls in the hip hordes is the live music and DJs that raise the roof with shape-breaking beats come nightfall.
