Spec-tacular Vintage Trove

March 16, 2015
Shanghai Code

At present, it may still feel endlessly cold and wet in China’s most stylish city, but Shanghai’s sultry summer days are just around the corner, and when they arrive in earnest we know you’ll be looking for some sweet shade. Or make that shades. In such instances, beady-eyed fashionistas know to point their peepers straight to Tianzifang’s Shanghai Code, a top shop stocked with a characterful cache of vintage sunnies and specs dating from the 1940s to the 1990s, and accessory ground zero for hip hers n’ sirs.

The brick walls and worn wooden shelves of this bitty boutique are lined with a many-hued melange of chicly unique frames sourced from old factories and second-hand markets across China. Step inside and you’ll gain an, ahem, eyeful of cool old-school aviators and wayfarers, but the sharp sighted might also spot some tortoiseshell flat tops and classic wireframes among the ever-changing collection. With so many styles it can take a little while to find the eye candy you’re after – should you go with the oversized square pair or the retro rounds? – but ensure you also allocate some time for perusing the smaller selection of found wristwatches, alarm clocks and other natty knick knacks. Code it get any better?
