Café, Resto n’ Cocktail Bar Trio
This impressive three-in-one concept from Shanghai’s Speak Low team encompasses a trio of drinking and dining dens. And stylish Sober Company’s motto? ‘If you’re still sober, don’t leave yet’!
Start off at Sober Café, which offers coffees, coffee-based cocktails and all-day breakfast from 8am until 4pm, when it switches to aperitifs and small plates. The Rice Eggs Benedict sports a jaw-dropping dumpling-like poached egg atop avocado. Their signature olive oil cake is surprisingly yum or try the bacon, maple and bitters soft-serve ice-cream.
Move on to second-floor Sober Kitchen, a cosy, industrial-chic restaurant doing modern takes on Chinese (think cold ahi poke, Ka’s Fried Chicken, foie gras mapo tofu, and five-spice panna cotta), with cocktail-pairing and food-inspired sips.
Wrap up at dark, vibey adjacent Sober Society, a slick bar focused on sublime digestif cocktails and brown spirits. Work your mojo and you may get invited on to secret speakeasy Tipsy.
Sober has been masterminded by mixology whizz Shingo Gokan, a Tokyo bartender who joined the pioneering crew at Nippon-inspired NY bar Angel’s Share. After winning the Bacardi Legacy award for his speakeasy-esque drink Speak Low, he went on to open his first Shanghai bar of the same name in 2014, before launching brother bar/eatery Sober Company in 2016. He’s an expert at bringing Japanese cocktail skills to the West, and western drinking culture to the East. We’ll drink to that…
