Shanghai’s Best Coffee Shops

November 03, 2017

Nothing combats Shang's winter blues like a steaming-hot hit of knee-judderingly strong java – so here’s LUXE’s list of caffeine spots for when the temperature drops. If you’re not full of beans when you arrive at these fab four joe-joints, we guarantee you will be when you leave…

The daily grind is not something to be avoided at modern, minimalist Café del Volcán, an expert-but-inclusive coffee boutique and roaster, which invites visitors to taste unique beans and take home top-notch coffee-making skills. Whether you’re a budding barista or a seasoned roastmaster, there are plenty of workshops to pick from. Sociable, community-minded Volcán also hosts a free weekly coffee club, with talks and tastings all focussed on – yup – specialty beans.

Artisanal-joe joint Sumerian is a Jing'an stalwart roasting its own artisan beans in winsome wood-beamed surrounds; don’t miss the house line of butterlicious Boom Boom Bagels and locally-made Strictly Cookies. Here, espresso comes with a caffeinated punch and the mocha is a notch above the many ‘meh’ versions out there. Got a coffee-themed question? The friendly, American-Chinese team are happy to dispense tips and wisdom.

Refuel on home-baked goodies at cosy Baker & Spice. Flop down happily at the large communal table in this woody mid-shop pit stop; you might leave with some new friends (you’ll definitely leave on a sugar/caffeine high). Struggling to select from the bountiful spread? The farmhouse carrot cake and a latte or – go on – glass of wine, will have you raring for retail round two...

The Sober Company is something of a holy trinity: first-floor Sober Café is its most caffeinated component (a restaurant and bar complete the trio). From 8am, the cafe does a fine line in coffee, coffee-based cocktails and all-day breakfast until 4pm; after that, the focus shifts to small plates (and more cocktails). We’ve heard whispers of a secret fourth space; go, and report back...
