Regional Café & Lounge
Totter down Wulumuqi Nan Lu during the day and you’ll espy Regional, a seemingly simple glass-fronted coffee shop – ideal for a midday brew and bagel – brandishing a very polished, minimalist fitout of white walls, low-slung heather grey sofas, and modish orange swivel stools. But come nightfall, the slick finish and fittings all start to make sense as the space transforms into a dimly-lit and atmospheric cocktail lounge, extending up onto a slightly larger second floor of intimate window-side nooks and two-top tables set against a colourful art-and-design-book mural.
The drinks list is populated with laid-back classics such as White Russian, lychee martini, mojito, daiquiri and cosmopolitan cocktails, as well as European beer, ice wine and white wine, however unlike most bars, it’s not the tasty tipples that keep the Shanghai’s scenesters coming back... Owned and operated by a DJ (Deep19), it should come as little surprise that the bar’s main focus is music – to be specific, a masterfully curated ambient house tracklist – and has been fitted accordingly with a top-of-the-range soundsystem and DJ booth that could hold a torch to any nightclub. Thankfully, the music just tickles the edge of your sensibilities as the audio levels are kept to a volume that allows comfortable conversation – a rare find in Shanghai.
