Though it still has some way to go to stand equal alongside its international counterparts, the Chinese fashion galaxy is certainly illuminated on a global scale by ever brighter stars each year – from Vega Zaishi Wang, Simon Gao, projects like Tu Cheng and BIFT works, to Paris Fashion Week’s recently crowned darling, Masha Ma. Inspired by an orchid blooming in the dead of night, Ma’s fall/winter 2014 collection in a tonal palette of blacks, whites and navies draws on nature by way of textured layering, woven fabrics and embroidered flowers, and its March runway showing quickly earmarked the Central Saint Martins graduate as one of the most exciting up-and-coming designers to watch.
Juxtaposing the soft floral details are intricate, heavy fabrics like cable knit, wool jacquard and fur, fashioned into kimono-style coats and fixed with black nylon belts to create warrior-esque silhouettes, while flowing satin skirts, sheer weave panels, and cropped tank blouses up the feminine ante. The collection might not be the most wearable on the market, but no one can deny it’s one of the more artistic and exclusive, especially given it’s only on sale at Shanghai boutique ONEBYONE. With such exposure and limited availability, best you get in before the global competition catches on. Shine on, Ma!
