The Mayan gods must be smiling on Shanghai this summer – the buzzing metropolis has just welcomed new Mexican eatery and bar MAYITA, which besides boasting one of the best rooftop situs in the city is also home to a top notch, tamarind-flavoured frozen margarita sure to be pulling in the sundowner crowds this steamy season. The casual little sister of latin stalwart MAYA takes over the 80-seat, sixth-floor space at Silver Court formerly occupied by Fat Olive, and the restaurant’s trump card is unquestionably its oversized, palm-fringed patio framed by stellar Pudong views.
MAYITA’s menu includes some inherited favourites from its older sibling, plus plenty of new dishes like a seafood ceviche platter stacked high with chipotle prawns, mango salsa scallops and tuna dressed with lime, chilli and coconut. Share-style mains span tender slow-cooked beef ribs braised for 24 hours and served with lime-crushed baby potatoes and a tomatillo-guajillo salsa, to more green-friendly options like Wild Mushroom Soft Corn Tacos and Achiote Quinoa with Spanish rice, red beans and spice-rubbed roast vegetables. Desserts and drinks are equally inviting – think choc-pistachio ice cream and a rotating selection of flavoured frozen margaritas – and all this is best enjoyed on the bright patio tables. Be sure to book ahead.
