La Table by Maison Pourcel
Once the epicentre of expat activity in Shanghai’s storied past, the Former French Concession has retained much of the historic architecture, but sadly lost much its old Gallic essence. Since 2010, however, Michelin-starred chefs and twins Jacques and Laurent Pourcel have been bringing back some of that quintessential French flavour by way of their white linen establishment La Table by Maison Pourcel, an elegant fine diner occupying the former ‘Red House’ space in chic style.
In clement weather, opt for a coveted spot on the spacious outdoor patio for sweeping panoramas of the city; though the indoor seating is nothing to scoff at either with floor-to-ceiling windows and a domed skylight affording equally impressive, moonlit views. With ambience set, now peruse La Table’s menu of elevated Gallic fare – we rather love the seasonal 4-course prix-fixe, which features delights like escargots in herb crumb-beignets; rib eye with truffle cauliflower cream; and decadent vanilla crème brulées with fluffy madeleines – with everything made using locally-sourced, market-fresh ingredients. All that’s left? A bottle of Chateau La Pardelle Bordeaux from their 200-bottle strong, predominantly French wine list. Santé!
