La Société

Nestling alongside the recently revamped Rockbund district’s must-visit haunts like The Rockbund Museum, as well as fine diners Capo and Light & Salt, new haute Cantonese eatery La Société couldn’t be more at home in the historic YWCA building. Taking its cue from the newly gentrified neighbourhood, marble tiled floors, bevelled mirror pillars, white leather armchairs and lacquered rosewood tables abound, but with an overriding aesthetic that is unmistakably 1920s – the very period during which the Rockbund first peaked, of course.

Heading up the pass is esteemed chef Ma Kwai Ming, who earned 3-Michelin stars (no less) working at Hong Kong’s Four Seasons, so never mind the usual har gau and siu mai, opt for the more luxurious varieties of dim sum like abalone tart made with a fragrant, buttery walnut shortcrust; steamed sea urchin dumplings with peppered minced shrimp; and fried dumplings with a pork and morel mushroom stuffing. Even the virtues of their lobster noodles have been extolled by the likes of world-famous chef Jean Georges Vongerichten, so don’t expect a final bill that is less than eye-watering… In fact, you might want to ramp up the credit card limit before booking.
